When a Simple Game Becomes a Thinking Lab: Reimagining Rumal Jhapatta for Foundational Learning 🧠🎯

At Udaan: The 7 Habits Foundation School, we believe that foundational education is not preparation for life—it is where life skills begin. Our endeavour is to transform familiar play experiences into intentional learning ecosystems where every movement, decision and response develops the child.

One such innovation is our reimagined version of Rumal Jhapatta—a culturally familiar game redesigned as a multidimensional cognitive-learning experience.

Two teams are created. One team receives alphabets; the other receives associated concepts. A central circle becomes the arena for attention, anticipation and decision-making. When the teacher announces a place beginning with a particular alphabet, the child must rapidly recognise the stimulus, interpret its relevance, make a decision, enter the circle, follow the prescribed movement pattern and remain alert for the cue to act.

The child who retrieves the rumal then demonstrates five conceptual associations—a name, place, animal, thing and edible item—connected to the given alphabet.

What appears to be a simple playground game is actually activating executive functioning, working memory, auditory processing, cognitive flexibility, pattern recognition, vocabulary retrieval, motor coordination, attention regulation and rapid decision-making.

More importantly, children learn to pause, process and respond rather than merely react. They practise following algorithms, recognising patterns, anticipating outcomes, communicating ideas and making mindful choices within a social environment.

This is the essence of play-based and experiential pedagogy: converting movement into cognition and cognition into life skills.
